A Woman's Curse?
Meredith F. Small

1 The Dagon society is very much shaped by the passing of menstrual periods and is a symbolic language that is very similar to the changing of the seasons or the tides or the moon. The identity's of the men will be changed and can even be forced to marry if the knows who was the first to lay with the woman after she had stopped visiting the huts. It also shows the controlling nature of these men that they need to keep tabs on anything that they can. A Woman's identity is very strongly established by the step in the menstrual cycle that they are at and the huts play a large part in showing when the women are potentially ready to conceive. it is also useful in determining who the father is if that is being disputed.
2 They reflect both by having a place that is occupied by certain people at certain times which are set by a biological time. And in their society they mark this important transition by having a symbolic task be preformed to show the group when they can soon mate.
3 Most of the menstrual taboo in this country comes mostly from any talking about the process and what is happening while it is taking place. Anything that has to do with bodily function has at least to be thought about before bringing it up in conversation without offending someone.
4 The thing that spoke to me through out this whole article was the level of increased health due to the lack of menstrual cycles. If the proposed method of birth control in the article is viable it would seem to me a direction worth pursuing and would hopefully give health benefits similar to the women in natural fertility society's.

Article 8 Life without Fathers or Husbands
By Clifford Geertz

1 The Na have figured out a very unique way to eliminate jealousy almost the people that are in the area by allowing the freedom to make love to anyone and it is not a giant ordeal and either man or woman could be the one asking the other out. While there are downfalls to this type of open sexual forum such as disease which is very prevalent in their society it does seem to be a very strong regulated system.
2 Na culture has rules that make it possible to exclude others that is true. But it is also true that the freedom of asking out members of both sexes are permitted to seek out members of the opposite sex. So even though it's different and not the same way that everyone has decided to live there still is order and balence within their culture.
3 The Na have a very different form for being intimate with each other. but there is no way of saying that one is better than the other. There is just as much abnormality in any other culture in the world. And I would characterize them as unique but they do not vary so much to say that they are not people.
4 Now it's not that I'm surprised to find that this altered style of living has eventually has been fought against. But the real thing to think about is that these people who so many deem to be incestuous or primitive have found away to take away from jealousy and increase genetic diversity within that culture witch as I find more and more out would seem to be a direction that we would want to pursue but we seem to be too stuck in our ways. Which doesn't surprise me but i wish we could change.

Office Work and the Crack Alternative by Philippe Bourgois

1 For one it is important to remember that there is not a universal reason that people switched sectors. But the things that are discussed in the article include the increase in income due to selling drugs in contrast to working in a factory eight to ten hours a day far from their home and comfort and for only a fraction of what they could make selling. There is also the matter of a large number of those factory jobs are being exported to other countries.
2 Both of these professions are looked at in a way that suggests that those individuals that work in these professions are bad people altogether. When there is a much larger universal at hand that is being overlooked; which is that whenever, wherever there is a strong enough demand for something no matter how strange or illegal people will fill this demand. And for those people that are filling the demand it is not necessarily that they want to be doing something illegal but it is something they can do. Furthermore there is very little training required and the pay is good.
3 This article while I understand all of what it is saying I feel is inaccurate. Sure if you are packed in like sardines as the people in New York are and there are only so many jobs that people without proper training can get. But that doesn’t change the fact that we were all born a clean slate a blank canvas that can be whatever you want it to be. And any of the people that live here can find a way to do just about whatever they want if they stick to it.

Michael Christeen The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis: Worlds Shaped by words By David S Thomson Article 12

1 The two models that are talked about are high and low codability. This relationship is used to show how strong certain ideas are within a culture based on how many terms there are in that culture to describe something. The idea behind this is that only where you have a large number of terms for an idea in a culture then people in that culture have a better understanding of what that idea is. As opposed to people having a low codability for an idea which makes it more difficult to understand. 2 Two ways that grammar shapes perceptions are color and cars. Other cultures have fewer terms for colors and see only a smaller group of colors not the traditional six or seven colors that we see in our culture. It is also true of cars in our culture, because we are around them so often we can differentiate between many different cars with relative ease. It is not to say that these other culture can’t see all the individual colors or cars but they don’t see the unique characteristics that make them up. 3 The ways in which language affects my experience are infinite. There are so many different kinds of language that are used to say things in so many different situations. I can talk to my friends, my parents, my teachers and each is in a different way and because of that the language I use affects all the situations I’m in. For each situation I have to use certain kinds language to express ideas to certain people which in turn shapes the experiences I have. So language really affects all of the experiences that I have ever had. 4 This article was a real gem it express’ an Idea that is not thought about by the vast majority. This is undoubtedly why it was written but the thing that I found the most interesting it that there is such opposition to Whorf’s idea of language. To me it does not make sense to say that language doesn’t shape your perceptions. I would say that the only thing that might be more engrained into a person is whatever they believe in their heart to be truth and even that is facilitated by language. And to say that it doesn’t at least provide a structure for thinking and people with similar structures can see things in similar ways seems strange to me.

Career Advice for Anthropology Undergraduates By John T. Omohundro Article 1

1 There were many different paths that an anthropologist can take while using this particular discipline. A significant portion of them have gone on to be in the academic field. There are also anthropologists represented in medicine, supervising others, and business. 2 Having a holistic perspective is always a helpful. Whenever you have to work with a group of people such as your class or anyone else that you may need to work with to obtain information for my major it is extremely illumining to be able to look at these people as a larger group and to see my place in it. It makes studying in general easier because I can apply the same methods for gathering information about anthropology to gather information about anything else. And that is the largest key to learning not necessarily having the knowledge right now but being able to find it. 3 There are many things that I enjoyed about the article but what stood out to me was that having a degree seems to be the big thing not really which exact degree it is. If we could all accept that and then just find a subject you like and jobs that can work with your degree then it would take a lot of the anxiety out of going through college in search of employment.

there are so many facets to this life and people dont seem to be able to see what i consider to be the most important. we need to enjoy all that life has to offer. and all this bullshit about not having the time to make something happen or not having enough time to do things you enjoy is just a way to say that you wont do it if it is hard. if yiu really want to do something you find a way and thats all there is to it.

i dont know if anyone reads my random words at random times but if you do thank you and have a good one.

Cell Membrane: The cell membrane is a barrier on the outside of the cell to regulate what goes in and out of the cell.
Cilium: Are located on the outside of the cell to assist in movement.
Cytoplasm: Is a fluid inside the cell which contains water and nutrients for the cell.
Chromosomes/DNA: Are an organized structure which contains DNA and other protiens found in the cell.
Golgi: Are used for packaging and also for trasfering energy.
Lysosome: Are chemials that are used to breakdown waste.
Mitochondria: Are called the powerhouse of the cell. They breakdown food and give energy to the cell.
Nuclear Membrane: Is a barrier between the nucleus and the cytoplasm.
Nuclear Pore: Are the places where the inner and outer membrane of the nuclear envolope are joined.
Nucleus: The nucleus is in charge of the cell and it also contains the chromosomes and the DNA.
Ribosomes: Are the makers of protein for the cell.
Exercise #2
The cell is considered the basic unit of life because it is the smallest unit within an organism and the building blocks of life. There are pieces of the cell that are smaller but they can not function indipendently of the cell which makes the cell the basic unit of life.

EATING Christmas in the Kalahari

Michael Christeen
Eating Christmas in the Kalahari
By Richard Lee
Article 2

Richard Lee used a couple different methods to try and understand the events that took place in the dessert. First he watched the events through his own point of view to try and understand what was happening as he was told more and more often that he had made a serious miscalculation. Then he began to branch out to other individuals that he used as informants to try and understand why things were not going the way that he had anticipated, and finally he was able to detect the humor that was supposed to be evident to him. After that he was able to ask questions about the custom and why any meat that is brought in is torn down and said to be worthless.
The rapport among the Kung and Richard seemed to be a kind of playful teasing. Even amongst the natives there is ribbing and a playful argument going on. Even the way that meat is brought in and the reaction that the hunter receives when he informs others of his kill shows this playfulness. To me it seems that this is there to not break down the community but to build it stronger and evenly so that they might be able to minimize conflict.
The most interesting thing in the whole article is not the way that they celebrate their Christmas or the way that they make fun of each other when it comes to meat. The thing that really made an impact on me was why they do it. Think about it providing food for a group of people is a noble thing but even after that you have to accept criticism of your act. And why do they do this to not make conflict between the members in the community. To me this shows an amazing amount of foresight that even in the simple task of gathering food can build resentment and not only that but they have found a way to work around it.

Just Kidding

This play was not only very funny but it was the first production at that the melodrama that was set in a modern setting. While I had seen many things at the melodrama and most of the time the players give a more modern feel to A Christmas Carol, it was a new experience to see them in a different light. The story itself was amazing as well because while as first it seemed farfetched that Calvin could pull the whole thing off without being caught the suspicion of the photographers being on the take it allows for the possibility that Calvin could get as far as he does. The actors also did a wonderful job being their characters they were able to really capture the heart that embodied the emotions of the events that were taking place. It was really as if I had a window into another world with a whole new set of problems and people than I experience in usual life. One of the other things that is always so amazing when I go to the melodrama is the environment which allows you to let yourself to be transported to an imaginary world where all you have to do is watch it unfold around you. But there is also some residual feelings of my childhood whenever I am there a feeling that is a little beyond explanation it is as if I can sit down with my younger self he has none of the worries or problems of this world and it lets me go back there to see and experience the world through younger eyes when things had just begun and my world was so much smaller than the one I have today. It is a comfortable feeling but only for a time because after it is over I must return to the surface of my existence and take another breath. I stretch out in the night after watching another world take place and think of my world and what it is like and why. I begin my journey of self examination again and look back on all that has changed since I traveled to this magical building in the fourth grade and can’t help but marvel at where my path has taken me and where it will continue to lead me. The power of such a place goes beyond all reason and understanding and leaves you back at the beginning of a trail that has not been completed. I have often wondered why these things run through me but I think it is just part of the memories of the melodrama.
There are so many things that make the melodrama such a mystical place but so many of them are beyond words. The sawdust on the floor, the sing along, the happy birthday and anniversary call, and the piano all these things make up part of a place that is unique to itself and lets you experience the magic of that place each time that you come back and it is with great joy and love for their art that the actors pass to the audience that really lets you get drawn into that world and let be a part of it. Other than that I don’t know what to say I can’t explain exactly what it is like to be there because although you are just watching a play if you let you are not there at all and that is the goal of any cast to let the viewer leave the world around them if only for a short while. Thank you for the experience and enjoy the time that you have.

An Experience of Altered Consciousness

Good morning and welcome to the show. today we will be discussing consciousness a very deep and confusing subject for many. the thing to remember is that while it is a lot of fun to go and ponder these mysteries it is only using up your time that you have to question and doubt what is around you. while it is fun, all it lets you do is enjoy a game and if that is all you want go ahead and play but that is not what gives me the most joy in life.

An Experience of Altered Consciousness

Consciousness comes in many forms and one of mine was especially interesting to me. For no particular reason whatsoever I decided to stay awake as long as I could. The task became very challenging as time drew out and I can say for most certain it was an altered state. It may seem strange that I would do this maybe even crazy but I believe that experiencing different states is a key element in understanding them.
The day started off in a normal way it was only as encountered the early morning that i experiencing difficulty. As I made it into the next day I decided to watch the sun rise. While I cannot accurately describe the sheer beauty or exuberance of the moment, it was as if my soul was being filled with light. Not only was there joy and love but that I should experience these things. As the day progressed things continued to go well I spent the entire day enjoying it for what it was another day in my tiny little life. that night I stood up for myself in a way that I would not normally do and as I worked into the next day as I was walking home at three a.m. the sky and the street lights looked so beautiful. It was like looking at the most breathtaking landscape and then realizing that id been there all my life. It was a beautiful end to a beautiful day and one that I would never trade away.
It is only when we let ourselves see the complex metropolis as a living breathing moving thing in and of itself that we accept the world for what it is. This look through a different state makes for an amazing revelation in the soul it helps the individual seek out the good to find things that spread joy and that is something we all need more of. To live a life and find the good
in it, to go through this experience and learn something about it and even better to learn something about myself. I have spent the last thirteen months going over and over in my mind as to why this all is happening. Sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't but other states show a different side to the world and that has the power to let you see the beauty in what’s around you and let the world be as you see it and to just ride the wave.
There are many ideas and theories as to why we exist, and why we think, and why we do all of the things that we do. That will not do anything for us. The thing that needs to be looked at is whatever builds you up. Whatever you do in this world that will make you feel more complete and once you find it you have to grab hold and never let go. The great depression epidemic in this country is fueled by a failure to do whatever it is that completes you. That is where the true failure of our culture lies. No longer do we take the time to enjoy the world we keep running to catch the water at the end of the mirage and it just isn’t there. Many of our problems could be solved if we took the time to find what we really want to do.
In conclusion it is important that I make myself clear as to my aim what does this knowledge pose to let me gain. How can my understanding be of any use to myself or on a larger scale how can my understanding help unravel problems for the masses? And there seems to be a relatively simple answer to these questions; for me and for the rest of the world that I touch it helps show how to just live in enjoyment of each moment of my microscopic second that is my life. There seems to be a lot in this world that I do not understand but that’s all right this moment is happening exactly how this moment is happening and that is what I took away from my experience. That it is all right for things to keep going and that you can’t stop what’s coming, trusting that you can deal with whatever comes next is the largest boulder to set down. I hope
that you understand the peace I speak of if you don’t I do hope it comes to you. I have enjoyed your class very much thank you for all of the thought you have stirred up.
How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!The world forgetting, by the world forgot.Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd;
